HVO has been addressing one of these issues - the inadequate number of health care professionals - since our founding in 1986. In the intervening years, however, there have been significant changes in the global health landscape. We have seen the decline and near eradication of polio, but a precipitous increase in trauma related to road traffic accidents and rapid industrialization. Developing and emerging countries now struggle with the burden of both infectious diseases and the growing impact of chronic diseases so familiar to developed countries. The HIV-AIDS epidemic continues to ravage the lives of millions of people around the world leaving families, villages and countries devastated.
